On Saturday, September 2, 2006 beginning at 9am CST earmarked the 48th Judging of
the Labor Day Beauty Contest which consisted of seven age groups of which the first
three age groups had a category specifically for young boys and these winners of these
groups along with the young girls up to Miss Labor Day Pre-Teen had been announced at
the Pageant Judging on Saturday. Lovely flowers had adorned the stage that were donated
by both Deb's Flowers and Jasper Florist. The two older age groups, Miss Labor Day 2006
and Miss Whitwell 2006 had been announced at the Pageant Show on Labor Day Monday,
September 4, 2006 at 6pm CST.
On Labor Day Monday, Sept 4, 2006, which began at 9am CST, Whitwell's 49th parade
had many floats and very many people stated that it was the largest parade and festivities
they had seen in a long time. Frank Atterton served as the Grande Marshall of the
event who headed up the fabulous parade followed by very creative floats. Jim Gentry
Chevrolet provided many of the trucks that rode many of the Past Miss Whitwells, and
others rode in nice convertibles of which some were provided by the car show, and
they were followed by the present Miss Whitwell 2005 Kayla Cates who was followed
by very many of this year's Labor Day Beauty Pageant Contestants! After the flag-raising
as Miss Jane sang the National Anthem, Several politicians were on hand to make
speeches such as Commissioner of Labor James Neely from Governor Bredesen's office,
as well as Senator Jim Bryson, who is also running for Governor.
There were many games, fantastic BBQ Chicken cooked by County Commissioner
Marshall Raines and Ray Stephenson, more great food, entertainment by Whitwell
Church of God and Morningstar Baptist Church Gospel Groups, the Country/Southern
Rock band 'Unwound' rocked the crowd, the fabulous car show was sponsored by the
Marion County Cruisers, crafts by TennesseeCountryStuff.com and First United
Methodist Church of Whitwell, face painting art by Brandi Williams, and Corn on the
Cob was sold by the Whitwell High School Band.
Yummy fried pies and lemonade was served by the WHS Dance Team, great Funnel
Cakes served by WHS Girls Softball Team, and just plain fun that day. The sweet baby
boy shown is the Tiny Tots Most Photogenic James Ray Terry, IV in the Mr. Labor Day
Tiny Tots 1 to 3 years age group! Lowe's of Kimball held a Kid's workshop booth, and
Pastor Happy Jack the clown of First United Methodist thrilled the kiddies. Hillis Layne
who was a former great major league baseball star from Whitwell was on hand, the
WHS Dance Team held super performances, and Renee' Hill was just plain pooped from
all the planning and hard work that went into this huge celebration! She intends to
hibernate for at least two weeks sight unseen!
Also, the Pageant Show began at 6pm CST, and it was also a big success. The rain
caused us to have the show under the Whitwell Ball Park Pavilion next to the concession
stand, but it was a good thing, because it really turned out great! All of the contestants
were very lovely in their gowns of rainbow colors. The reigning beauty Miss Labor Day
2005 Nicole Massengale crowned her successor, the new Miss Labor Day 2006 Tarran
Raulston, and the beautiful reigning queen Miss Whitwell 2005 Kayla Cates graciously
relinquished her crown to the new Miss Whitwell 2006 Brittany Huckaby. Whitwell now
has their 48th Queen, who is a real natural beauty. She was simply gorgeous and
basking in her glory in the present company of the Past Miss Whitwells that were
timeless beauties who spoke about how their lives have gone over the years.
Mary Roberts donated her time in creating the lovely sashes that the Past Miss Whitwells
adorned this day. Pam Neely of PJ's Photography took all of the official photographs
for the Pageant.
Miss Whitwell 2006 Brittany Huckaby has also now been qualified and accepted to go
further on to the higher State Competition on October 5th - 7th, 2006 in Clarksville, TN!
The City of Whitwell will keep you posted about this great news! If you or anyone you
know would like to donate toward sending Brittany to the State Competition, please
contact Renee' Hill at 423-658-5508 as more money is needed for buying her swimsuit,
sportswear and gown, and also to help send her family there with her to include travel
and accomodations. Brittany also received a $500 Scholarship to Chattanooga State from
the City of Whitwell. All this was possible by the donations of the generous local
business community.
There waw a drawing for a brand new computer, the Senior Citizens of Whitwell held a
drawing for the most beautiful handmade quilt you ever saw, then the City of Whitwell
paid tribute to those who incorporated the City of Whitwell 50 years ago that included
Former Mayor Alvin Young, Former Vice-Mayor WE Turner and many other 'Pillars of the
Town' such as the Original Fire Department and many others who began the Labor Day
activities and those who worked tirelessly over the past half century.
Finally, many danced to the Bluegrass Band "Full Pull" from Dunlap while others clapped
their hands and stomped right where they sat! Then at 9pm CST Mayor Stuart Morrison
of Whitwell shot the Fireworks that marked the end of the festivities with a
Beautiful Big Bang!
All in all Whitwell's 49th Annual Great Labor Day Celebration was a wonderful success!
Oh, and we can't forget about the cow who broke loose in the ball field and ran away
from the Cow Game! Someone mentioned that the cow got away and ran up the
mountain! Hey, Has anyone found him yet?"

Cheers!
